  • Short Description

The water industry in Ghana is quite a complex one. In spite of the many freshwater bodies that abound, most people do not have access to safe drinking water partly due to human activities that pollute these water bodies and the inadequacy of water treatment plants to treat and distribute treated water.

  • Full Description

The lack of potable drinking water and sanitation systems is a severe public health concern in Ghana. A large number of folks in the rural areas depend largely on untreated water from rivers lakes, ponds and lagoons for their survival. There have been governmental and private interventions in providing clean sources of water such as boreholes, wells, pipe-borne and water reservoirs among others in deprived towns and villages. Domestic and industrial urban water supplies are based almost entirely on surface water, either impounded behind small dams or diverted by weirs in rivers. Water supplies in rural areas, however, are obtained almost exclusively from groundwater sources. Surface waters are the main drinking-water source for the communities of Northern Region.
